WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is an effective, efficient, full-body workout that is based on the principles of core and spinal alignment, stability, and breath. Pilates is a happy medium between a rigorous gym workout and calming, meditative movement. Pilates utilizes concentric and eccentric resistance, which builds long, lean muscle strength, streamlining the target muscle group. Quality of movement versus quantity of repetitions is the focus, which facilitates muscle memory that will persist well beyond an hour-long Pilates session. Pilates is a focused mental exercise that facilitates an ability to isolate particular muscle groups and joints. Pilates brings about a heightened awareness of the body that improves client performance in all of their physical activities.

Pilates is a strengthening and rehabilitative system of movement. It is unique in that it utilizes props that provide resistance and encourage proper positioning, targets small, stabilizing muscle groups without engaging the larger muscle groups, and develops joint stability. Additionally, Pilates hones in on specific muscle function, and promotes anatomical understanding.

Pilates utilizes matwork exercises and machines specially designed to maximize results. It is also a complete mind-body fitness program. You will not only enjoy a challenging and highly effective workout, but will learn about musculature, proper alignment, joint range of motion, and injury prevention. The goals of Pilates are healthy alignment of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, as well as, awareness of the shoulder girdle, ribcage, and pelvic girdle stability. Pilates also offers focus of breath integration with movement. Group matwork is enhanced through use of specialty Pilates equipment, such as the Reformer, which is fitted with springs, bars, and straps to ensure proper form and provide extra challenge. A well-rounded Pilates practice includes mat and equipment work.

Having become pregnant for the first time at the age of 39, I was hyperaware of the need for my body to be as strong and prepared as possible for childbirth. Not only did Chandler strengthen my pelvic floor and open up my upper body so I could breath better, she also helped me emotionally and gave me the confidence I needed to trust myself and my body to do what it was designed to do.
